DOOKERAN IS WORLD CLASS

THE EDITOR: I am very much consternated to hear a minister in her Budget reply to Mr Winston Dookeran’s presentation describe him as "an intellectual fraud" — the economy of TT is clearly not something that he understands. She added that his contribution was baseless because he quoted from documents that were not relevant, situations that did not apply to Trinidad and Tobago. I cannot imagine an eminently qualified economist — a man who is a visiting Professor at Harvard University — a man who worked with the IMF and a former Central Bank Governor appointed by the PNM government — a man who recently turned down a job at a renown Canadian University — a man who has been acclaimed, proclaimed, and heralded as one of the best economists in the world.

A man who performs his duty with efficiency and distinction but without ostentation, to let his bucket down in Trinidad being labelled as an "intellectual fraud" by a non economist. She surely insulted the intelligence of a famous, honorable, dignified and highly respected son of the soil. I wish to advise the Honorable minister, who I have a tremendous amount of respect for, as an eloquent politician platform speaker that she should in future debates advance cogent and formidable argument to disprove or rebut another member’s presentation instead of insulting his or her intelligence.
