Business community: TT is under attack

THE BUSINESS community condemned last night’s bomb blast in St James as an attack against Trinidad and Tobago, but steered clear of calling on the Government to implement a State of Emergency in order to deal with crime in the country.

Chamber of Industry and Commerce president Christian Mouttet said the chamber was shocked to learn about last night’s incident, and viewed it as a clear attempt to destabilise the nation. Mouttet said now was the time for the Government and the armed forces to act strongly and decisively to bring the crime situation under control.

Asked if the chamber would support the implementation of a State of Emergency to deal with the situation, Mouttet said this call has been made many times and while "there was a time and place for everything," now was not the time for a State of Emergency. He added that it was not necessary to take this step and all citizens, including the nation’s leaders, must band together to deal with crime.

The Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) also said it was not advocating a State of Emergency either.
