Happy anniversary to Chinese community
THE EDITOR: Trinidad and Tobago will be celebrating two hundred years since Chinese immigrants landed on our shores. October 1806 is when the first Chinese immigrants first arrived in the Caribbean. Since then the Chinese community has made a positive contribution to our society, even though they came as indentured labourers to work the sugar cane fields. But today (October) 2005 the Chinese decedents who form part of our multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society have much to celebrate. They make up a small percentage of our nation. They have contributed their talents, their skills in various sectors of our society, their contribution have been in business, commerce, the restaurant/food industry, the supermarket business, clothes and steam laundries and government. They have also formed themselves into an association with a Chinese Association building in St Ann’s, Port-of-Spain. With the bicentennial year approaching, we as a nation can help celebrate with our brothers and sisters of Chinese descent. A proposed "holiday" to celebrate the event of the occasion is very laudable. Congratulations to the Chinese community, continued success in all your ventures. Trinidad and Tobago is truly a "blessed" nation with varying peoples and cultures from all around the world; mixtures of all kinds of peoples. Happy 200th anniversary! KEN SMITH Woodbrook
