Kidnapped radio DJ escapes abductors

RICHARD BALGOBIN, a Radio Massala DJ who was abducted on Friday night, escaped from his abductors and was being treated at the Chaguanas Health Centre up to late yesterday.

Balgobin, brother of temporary Independent Senator Rolph Balgobin, was snatched as he was leaving his workplace at Chaguanas around midnight on Friday.

He told police he was bound and gagged and taken to bushes in Enterprise where he was kept.

Around 2.30 pm yesterday, Balgobin managed to remove the gag from his mouth and untied himself. He alerted a passer-by who contacted the Chaguanas Police and he was taken to the Chaguanas Health Centre where he was treated.

His brother, Rolph, told Sunday Newsday he was happy his brother was able to escape and thanked the police for their support.

The 28-year-old victim, who was only married two months ago, was shaken up over the incident. He said he was leaving his workplace with a colleague when they were abducted and bundled into a car. His colleague was dropped off at McBean, Couva, while Balgobin was tied up and taken to some bushes in Enterprise.

He said he did not know why he was abducted in the first place. Investigations into the incident are continuing.
