‘Thank God my unborn baby is alive’

Lavern Allen, one of the victims of Friday’s bomb blast in St James was thanking her lucky stars yesterday that her unborn child was not injured in the incident.

"I am happy, extremely happy that my unborn baby is still alive," said the expectant mother. Allen who is 22 weeks pregnant said yesterday that she was on her way to purchase something to eat on Friday at St James when the bomb went off. She was thrown to the ground and suffered damage to her left leg.

Allen said that the noise and the impact of the bomb left her in shock, but she was concerned for her baby.

She was standing very close to where the bomb had gone off.

When she was taken to hospital on Friday night, doctors told her that the baby did not suffer any damages.

Thanking her lucky stars, Allen said that the baby is her first and she is happy that no one died in the bombing.

She is expected to be discharged from hospital today.

Yesterday, Minister of Health John Rahael who visited Allen at Ward 23 of the Port-of-Spain General Hospital said that he expects the young woman to have a safe delivery when she is due.

He said that all victims of the bombing will be monitored even after they are discharged from hospital.

He assured that the patients would receive medical treatment, counselling and other services available by the Ministry of Health.
