Lucky: Move to President premature
Gillian Lucky, United National Congress (unc) Member of Parlia-ment for Pointe-a-Pierre, yesterday said the issue of writing to President George Maxwell Richards regarding Winston Dookeran’s takeover as Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives, was "premature" at this time. "There are others who are going to have to confront that very position or situation in terms of making a decision as to where they stand with respect to morality, politics, and integrity," Lucky said during the tea break in the House of Representatives. She also said the majority would have to show by clear indication where they stood on these issues. Commenting on Yetming’s call for Panday to hand over the Leader of the Opposition post to Dookeran, Lucky said, "I would have thought although the Constitution does not state it specifically, but I would have thought the political leader by virtue of the position he holds would also be given the Leader of the Opposition post." Lucky said she did not know if Panday and Dookeran came to a private "arrangement," but Dookeran would have to act as he saw fit. She said there were many UNC supporters who would like to know their representatives did not compromise on integrity. Lucky said although it may be a sad day when members were forced to publicly express their stance, supporters would find comfort knowing there were persons in the UNC who were unwilling to sacrifice their integrity. Yetming yesterday joined Lucky and Member of Parliament for Barataria/San Juan, Dr Fuad Khan, who became backbenchers after disagreeing with Panday’s comment — that politics had a morality of its own.
