Dookeran to PM: Name ‘Mr Big’

UNC Political Leader Winston Dookeran is calling on Prime Minister Patrick Manning to name the individual responsible for the explosions in Port-of-Spain, if he does in fact have such "vital information."

Dookeran said Manning’s statement — that he can identify the perpetrator of the bombings, but does not have sufficient evidence to conduct an arrest — was " the most irresponsible statement ever made by a prime minister on such a sensitive area as national security."

The UNC leader said Manning, in seeking to get a scapegoat for the crime situation, was now desperately attempting to ascribe political motives to a "phantom perpetrator whom he calls ‘Mr Big.’"

"He does not explain to an anxious population the purpose of publicly warning this individual who is allegedly behind the bombings before he or she can be arrested," Dookeran stated.

He said it was the most alarming statement to date, even from a Prime Minister who has made a habit of dismissing crime as being "temporary," "not affecting the average citizen," and "collateral damage." The Prime Minister must cease playing politics with the lives of citizens, Dookeran said.

He added, "These preposterous and irrational statements give the population more of an insight into the incompetence of the Government than it provides any logical explanation to how Government proposes to deal with the crime scourge."
