Two former Jamaat members on gun charge granted bail
Two ex-members of the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen were yesterday granted bail by a Tunapuna magistrate after they appeared in court for the second time on a gun related charge. Appearing before Mag-istrate Joanne Connor in the Tunapuna First Court were Salim Alexis and Adil Ghani. Both were arrested and charged with having a Glock and 12 rounds of ammunition in their possession on October 13 at Pasea Street, Tunapuna. When the men appeared on Monday, the arresting officer, PC Marvin Pinder, told the magistrate that tracings for the accused were not yet available. However, when the matter was called again yesterday, the tracings revealed that Alexis, also known as Salim Rasheed, had one matter pending in the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court. That matter is also for possession of a firearm. With respect to the second accused, tracings revealed that Ghani, 37, did not have any pending matters before the court. Connor then set bail with a surety at $60,000 for Alexis and $40,000 for Ghani. The matter involving Alexis, a high profile State witness in the Abu Bakr conspiracy to murder trial, and Ghani, an ex-member of the Jamaat, was adjourned to October 28.
