Costa Rica ‘sell out’ to Guatemala
THE EDITOR: "Beat Mexico!" became a reality on October 12 as Trinidad and Tobago "Soca Warriors" heeded that call. That 2:1 victory made a mockery of Costa Rica’s sell-out match to Guatemala, that is a microcosm of the way Latin American countries view Trinidad and Tobago. A one-time mayor of Arima spoke of his experience with Trinidad’s neighbour Venezuela at the level of the joint Chambers of Commerce and he observed that these South Americans are motivated by self-interest. It is against this background that the PetroCaribe Deal with non-oil producing Caricom countries is seen as an impediment to the functioning of the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME). President Hugh Chavez is getting away with contempt in the short run. Colonel Muamar Gaddafi of Libya became a detested man for interfering with the affairs of black Africa, and also became a suspect in the eyes of Fidel Castro of Cuba for dabbling in Caribbean affairs. I will never forget one of the main reasons why Ghana’s first ruler Kwame Nkrumah was ousted from power. He paid more attention to the Pan African Movement than the affairs in his own country which was critically important. A word to the wise. JEFFREY M JOSEPH Fyzabad
