Defence calls for seized documents
Defence attorneys involved in the Piarco Airport Inquiry yesterday issued a call for presiding magistrate Sherman Mc Nicolls to order that documents seized by the Anti-Corruption Investigations Bureau (ACIB) be brought to the court where the matter is being heard. The call came during the cross-examination of the State’s present witness, ASP Wayne Boyd, who was at the time being questioned by defence attorney Frank Solomon SC. During the cross-examination, the defence attorney asked that the witness step out of the courtroom. In the absence of the witness, defence attorneys Solomon and Vernon De Lima submitted to Mc Nicolls that there were questions surrounding the documents that witness testified as being seized by the ACIB. "The quantity of the evidence is a matter of real importance, so to is what is written on the files that have been seized by the Anti-Corruption Investigations Bureau. I have asked the witness several questions here which he is unable to answer and as a result, the integrity of these documents have come into serious question. It is for that reason we (the defence) are asking for you to see for yourself. There really can be no further avoiding of the issue. You must see it," argued Solomon. Attorney representing the State, Gilbert Peterson SC, in response to the submissions made by the defence, told Mc Nicolls that it simply did not make sense to have such a large number of files brought to court because there was no one who could properly identify them right away. Hearing resumes today.
