A Prisons van heading north yesterday crashed into a parked container-trailer leaving three prisoners and its driver seriously injured.

Reports state that around 4.50 pm, a convoy transporting prisoners from the San Fernando and South-western courts and police stations was heading north on the Solomon Hochoy Highway, when one of the drivers pulled out of the convoy, lost control and crashed into the parked trailer on the western side of the highway.

According to reports, the driver was the second in the convoy of three prisoner transport vans heading north on the highway, near Rip Speed Auto Parts and the Guayamare River. Drivers and passers by were able to pull the prisoners to safety, while the driver had to be cut out of the prison van.

The four were rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where they were warded in a stable and satisfactory condition. One of the driver’s legs was said to be smashed in the accident.

The crash caused a traffic pile-up for miles, from the Churchill Roosevelt Highway intersection in the North to Chaguanas and heading South.

Traffic remained at a standstill for as long as three hours. Police investigators were still at the scene of the accident up to news time.
