Thank you, Penal/Debe Regional Corp

THE EDITOR: The Penal/Debe Regional Corporation should be lauded for recognising deserving citizens living in the area. Citizens for a Better Trinidad and Tobago (CBTT) calls on other Regional Corporations to do the same. There are many patriotic citizens living in all parts of Trinidad and Tobago, so it is advisable for all other Corporations to recognise their people who volunteer their precious time and effort to help create a better Trinidad and Tobago.

Those receiving awards at the recent civic reception and award ceremony at Gulf City are just a handful of citizens in the Penal/Debe region who deserve to be singled out for their contribution to community work. There are many people living in this region and in other areas of Trinidad and Tobago who organise constructive and appropriate programmes to assist people with their social problems, yet they have never been recognised publicly or been paid for their efforts. They don’t limit their assistance to people of one race or religion, which makes them true heroes of their community.

It’s sad that few are aware of some of the truly deserving community workers who received awards at last Friday ceremony.

Pundit Keso Maharaj is a licensed marriage officer who offers spiritual advice and consultation. Mr Bridgelal Bachue is founder of the Satya Kabir Nidhi and president of Kabir Chawra Math Inc Mr Edwin Sookram, a teacher for 38 years, is now principal of Monkey Town Government School. Mr Rampersad Sieuraj is president of the Penal/Debe Chamber of Commerce.

Mr Buckreed Rahim was the founding member of the Union Hall Recreation Ground and now a Testament Church of God Pastor. Mr Ragbir Umraw, who has distinguished himself in the field of education, is the principal of Penal Presbyterian School. Pooran Sankar is a Church bishop and pastor. Mr Simboonath Beepat is a dedicated physical education teacher at Clarke Rochard Government School.

Mr Peter Leeson is known for his rearing of livestock and is now embarking upon a pilot project for schools in Central and South Trinidad where he will be initiating duck rearing programmes. I hope that this article will do justice to these good citizens who deserve to be mentioned for their contribution to a better Trinidad and Tobago.
