McIvor in town for latest blast
"Extreme measures must be taken!" This remark was made yesterday by Yvonne McIvor, victim of the July 11 blast on Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain. McIvor made the comment on her first trip into the city since the incident, when she arrived to pick up a cheque at Downtown Owners and Merchants Association’s (DOMA) head office. It was an ironical trip for McIvor, as another bomb exploded yesterday, this time on Henry Street. McIvor told Newsday that although she was not afraid, she had no desire to visit the Port-of-Spain area. "I am sure the Government is trying to find this bomber," she said. "They now have assistance from Scotland Yard and the FBI. I am sure they will get co-operation." "I don’t want to be depressed. When I first left the hospital, I didn’t want to be by myself, but I can’t live in fear," she disclosed. On the day of the first explosion which rocked Frederick Street, McIvor was on her way to catch a Public Transportation Service Corporation bus, when an explosive device went off, damaging her left leg. She spent two months at the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital recuperating from the injury. Mc Iver’s leg had to be amputated to the knee, and she is also deaf in the left ear. McIvor continues to undergo counselling with a psychiatrist, and she takes radiotheraphy treatment in St James for breast cancer. "I have been off of the medication for the past three weeks, because I am feeling better," she said. McIvor also gave special thanks to her husband, and said she was looking forward to receiving a prosthetic leg. "I have forgiven the bomber, nor am I looking for revenge, nor do I condone acts of violence or terrorism," she said. DOMA president Gregory Aboud said it was unfortunate that McIvor chose to come into Port-of-Spain that day. He said that the fact that the FBI director had come to Trinidad was significant, and played down yesterday’s explosion, saying, "It was a minor incident." Aboud said the FBI has a successful rate in the United States. He thanked the companies which supported McIvor.
