NFM worker dies in Miami hospital
National Flour Mills blast victim Sunil Persad, who was injured at the company’s Wrightson Road compound last week, died early yesterday at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Persad, 32, had sustained 90 percent burns to his body, while his colleague Wendell Blenman, 36, who remains warded in critical condition at Jackson Memorial, had sustained 70 percent burns to his body. NFM is arranging to have Persad’s body flown back to Trinidad for a funeral. The Monroe Road Cunupia man took a turn for the worst late Wednesday, and eventually succumbed to his injuries early yesterday morning. Michael Annisette, president of the Seamen and Waterfont Workers’ Trade Union, has commended NFM for its attempts to save the lives of the men, but called on Government to have the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) proclaimed. Annisette is also calling for a bigger package for family members of workers who are killed or injured on the job.
