Earthquake rocks TT again

Trinidad and Tobago was rocked by an earthquake at approximately 6:30 pm yesterday.

The earthquake was centred at 30 kilometres north of Trinidad and Tobago, which lies between two tectonic plates — the Caribbean and the North American plates. Residents from Diego Martin to Sangre Grande, and Scarborough, Tobago, felt the earthquake. Buildings rocked and furniture shook, sending citizens scampering for safety.

The Seismic Unit measured the earthquake at 5.0 on the Richter Scale.

Trinidad and Tobago was hit by a quake just last week, which was felt as far away as Grenada. The earthquake was centred north of Venezuela in the Paria Peninsula.

A representative at the Seismic Unit reported that no one was injured. "We are in a high seismic hazard for the Caribbean, and we should all be prepared with emergency supplies, and know of precautions," she said.
