TDC: Maracas clean-up is underway

THE Tourism Development Company Ltd (TDC) has said it was doing everything possible to ensure that the Maracas Bay facility was fully functional in the shortest possible time.

The company was responding to criticism on Thursday from Maracas Bay vendors, who on Wednesday protested the lack of clean-up operations at the beach after wave surges last weekend.

In a statement, the TDC noted that it was yet to determine the suitable type of sand to replace sand run off, but a hired excavator was to begin cleaning the main drains from yesterday. The company added that it immediately began assessing the damages to the facilities after the wave surges.

It stated the Fire Services pressure-washed the carpark, while staff from the Ministry of Tourism had removed debris, sludge and garbage from the beach area. They also used a backhoe and flatbed truck from the San Juan Regional Corporation to remove debris from the site.

In addition, the TDC stated that lifeguards placed sandbags at the entrance of their tower, and those bags remain as a precautionary measure. All water and sand were removed from the main building and TDC had removed sand intrusion from the STP building.
