$40 million for UWI from private sources
UWI Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne, has highlighted several major private contributions from both local and foreign sources, which have been made to the university. Alleyne was speaking at the second ceremony on Saturday evening for the Presentation of Graduates of the University of the West Indies at the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre. The audience at the event included graduates and their guests; Nigel Harris, Vice-Chancellor; Joseph Archibald QC, Honorary Graduate; Bhoendraadatt Tewarie, Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor; Hamid Ghany, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and other UWI officials. The Chancellor made reference to the physical expansion of the university, then made an appeal to non-governmental sources to contribute to the university. Alleyne said, "We were pleased to receive an additional sum of US $180, 223.80 from the estate of Ivy Maynier. I hope this kind of gift will be an example to others and we will see planned-giving become a standard mechanism for our alumni and friends to contribute to the University." Later in his address Alleyne added that the Petroleum Geoscience Programme has benefited from two major grants, US$ 2 million from Halliburton, BPTT and Landmark and TT$315, 000 from Kerr-Mc Gee. He also stated that the Faculty of Engineering has received TT $20,000 from the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers and TT $ 2.9 million from other areas. "I congratulate the Business Development Office in its search for additional resources. The consultancies being managed or undertaken total some TT$ 3.2 million and there are $ 29 million in projects in the pipeline. It also gives me great pleasure to thank Mr Arthur Lok Jack for the magnanimous gift of TT$ 20 million dollars," added Alleyne.
