New political party launched
LEADER OF the newly formed political party, Movement For National Development (MND), Attorney at law Garvin Nicholas has promised members of the public, that his party has no intention of surrendering TT to thugs and vagabonds, He stated that no government could ever get a reasonable hand on crime if they served to protect the criminals. Nicholas, a former advisor to Basdeo Panday spoke yesterday before a small crowd at the King George V Park during the official party launch. Nicholas highlighted one of the party’s major goals as being the fight against crime. Nicholas said national security will be provided for all citizens of TT, as no citizen will be considered as collateral damage of gang warfare. Nicholas noted that crime was having an effect on the population as TT’s Population now stands at 1.088 million. "Population growth is now -.74 percent. We are a dying nation as a result of drugs, violent assaults, murders, rapes and kidnappings," said Nicholas. Nicholas said MND is committed and willing to reduce crime through a number of initiatives, including the strengthening of gun laws, the placing of CCTVs to monitor highways and towns, the cleaning up of the police service, dealing properly with criminal deportees, the introduction of sentencing guidelines, the reduction of drugs entering the borders through the use of coast guard vessels and the building of TT’s own law enforcement team to deal with major situations. "We have to get out of this syndrome where we are always looking for help from the ‘big brothers’ and take charge of our own affairs," said Nicholas.
