Sports Minister should be ashamed
THE EDITOR: The government is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to build a stadium supposedly to afford local athletes the conditions to achieve world class status. Many sports commentators have already debunked that myth. There is no question that many of our athletes have already attained world class status without such facilities and some of that money would unquestionably be better spent on the community grounds to allow involvement by a greater number of young people in sports. The sad thing is that some of our young people who have already achieved world class status remain in poverty and destitution with little recognition or support from the government. Specifically, our women boxers who either already hold world titles or are on a path leading to world titles, one of whom recently received a national award, live here in squalor, without the means even to earn a decent living. No corporate sponsor would even hire them in dignified employment, but, even worse, the Government continually fails to keep simple promises to these dedicated athletes. The promises of politicians are as ephemeral as their hold on power but the Minister of Sports should be ashamed of himself for failing to keep his promises to this young woman. It is probably easier to force them to earn a living by whatever means than to contribute to their wellbeing and upliftment. KARAN MAHABIRSINGH Carapichaima
