Prison van driver in Guayamare crash dies at hospital

THE driver of the Amalgamated Security Services prisoners’ transport van who was involved in last Wednesday’s crash on the Uriah Butler Highway, succumbed to his injuries and died on Saturday.

Lennox Sampson, 55, of Lorensotte Village, Erin, died at the Mount Hope Hospital.

Sampson, an estate constable, was the driver of the prison van that veered off the highway near Guayamare flyover. The van crashed into two trailers parked on the shoulder of the highway. Police believed that he suffered a blackout at the wheel.

Sampson was trapped in the cab for almost one and a half hours while firemen struggled to get to him. Several of the 25 prisoners who were secured in individual cells, were also injured.

When Sampson was rescued, an Emergency Health Services ambulance rushed him to the Mount Hope Hospital where he was immediately taken in for emergency surgery. His leg had to be amputated.
