MPATT: Govt must deliver on new health initiative

MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS Association of Trinidad and Tobago (MPATT) president, Dr Chunilal Ramjit, yesterday expressed optimism that a new, modern hospital to be built in Port-of-Spain and related initiatives would significantly improve the quality of health care provided to the national community.

Addressing Thursday’s post-Cabinet news conference at Whitehall, Health Minister John Rahael said the new hospital would be established through a partnership between Government and the Baltimore-based, world-renowned Johns Hopkins Medicine International Hospital. Rahael explained that through this partnership, premier US health institutions would provide management for existing local hospitals and establish a new hospital in Port-of-Spain. Management has been identified by Government as one of the key areas which needs addressing in the health sector. Minister in the Ministry of Finance Christine Sahadeo previously indicated that Government continues to explore options in this area.

Rahael said a joint advisory council would be created to oversee the programme, a work programme would be submitted by January 2006, and a master plan in health administration would be formulated with September 2006 as the starting date.
