Murder, rape suspects held in police exercise
Officers of the St Clair Police Station, led by Sgt Ajith Persad, yesterday carried out traffic exercises at Saddle Road, Maraval, where they detected a number of traffic offences. A number of vehicles, drivers and passengers were searched during the exercise which started at 8 am and ended at 1 pm. Some of the offences were failure to wear seatbelts, driving with defective number plates and lights, transporting persons in a dangerous manner, and other minor offences. Motorists welcomed the roadblock exercise, saying they felt that criminal elements were using that route to transport drugs, arms and ammunition undetected. Other officers taking part in the exercise included acting Cpl Khan, and PCs Parris and Rambarran. In another exercise in Central Trinidad, 17 persons were arrested in an exercise led by Insp Ashton Clarke. The exercise began around midnight on Thursday and ended at 7 am yesterday. Those arrested included a murder suspect and others for rape, robberies and outstanding warrants. The exercise included officers of the Court and Process Branch who raided homes in Cunupia, Longdenville, Felicity, Caroni and Chaguanas. Officers included WPC Duncan and PCs Murrain, Singh and Mackoonsingh. Those arrested will appear before a Chaguanas magistrate on Monday. The exercises yesterday formed part of the anti-crime initiatives announced by Police Commissioner Trevor Paul.
