Woman killed in highway crash
A Palo Seco family was plunged into mourning yesterday, when the car in which they were travelling ran off the Solomon Hochoy Highway, flipped several times, and ended up on the hood, killing a female passenger in the front seat of the vehicle. The driver of the car was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital in a critical condition, and five children and two other passengers in the vehicle were treated for cuts, bruises and shock. Dead is Sakiran Mohammed, 49, of Beach Road, Palo Seco. Reports revealed that around 4.20 pm, a purple station wagon carrying eight persons was travelling along the southbound lane of the Solomon Hochoy Highway, when on reaching the Chase Village Flyover, the driver got a "bad drive," causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle swerved off the road into the northbound lane, flipped over several times and then landed on its hood. Sakiran, seated in the front passenger seat, was thrown from the vehicle into the road and died almost immediately. The driver of the vehicle remained pinned behind the steering wheel and was removed by passersby. By the time help arrived on the scene, the driver was barely conscious. Two children who sustained cuts and bruises, were bent over the body of the lifeless woman, pleading with officers — "Please make sure mammy alive." Other motorists at the scene were seen shedding tears as the children begged the police to save their mother. The fatal accident caused a massive traffic pile-up. Officers of the Freeport Police Station are investigating. Up to yesterday, 154 people had been killed in road accidents for the year. Last year, 160 people had been killed in road accidents during the same period.
