Taxi driver kills pedestrian
A taxi driver who knocked down and killed a pedestrian at, Enterprise Village, Chaguanas, on Saturday night, told police investigators that he was ordered at gunpoint to run over the pedestrian by a gunman who had abducted him. The dead man was identified as Anthony Hernandez, 33 of Enterprise. Reports revealed that at about 8 pm, Mark Ghany, a taxi driver of Mark Street, St Joseph, picked up three male passengers at Chaguanas who asked to be taken to Curepe. According to reports, on reaching Enterprise, one of the men pointed a gun at him and ordered him to drive.
Ghany told police investigators that as he drove along the old Southern Main Road he slowed down while a pedestrian was crossing at Enterprise Village. Ghany said that the gun was placed to his neck and he was ordered to drive and not stop. He said that after knocking down the pedestrian, he was ordered to drive to Las Lomas where he was tied up and his car stolen. Ghany said that he managed to untie himself and made his way to the Cunupia Police Station.
He was taken to the Chaguanas CID where he was interviewed by police officers. A check revealed that the man who Ghany had knocked down died at the Chaguanas Health Centre. Inspector Sookram and a party of officers carried out extensive inquiries and secured statements from several eyewitnesses. Investigators told Newsday that they are not yet convinced about the information supplied to them by Ghany. Up until late yesterday, the taxi driver remained detained.
