Charlieville mom doused with acid

A CHARLIEVILLE mother of three is now warded at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital after being doused with sulphuric acid by a relative. Her children are seven, five and two years of age.

According to reports, housewife Savita Singh, 30, was at her Clarke Road, Charlieville home at 6 pm, when she got into an argument with a relative as family members arrived.

The relative, 26, a self-employed Guyanese-born jeweller, grabbed a bottle of acid and threw the contents on the woman, burning her about her body.

The angry man also dropped some of the acid on his foot, and while washing it in the bathroom, the woman’s relatives were able to break down the burglarproof to get her out of the house.

Neighbours contacted the EHS and the woman was taken to the Chaguanas District Hospital and later transferred to the PoSGH, where she remains warded.

Meanwhile, police held a man from the village at the home of his relative at Warren Village, Chaguanas, who is assisting them in the investigation.

The couple has been romantically linked for five years.

When Newsday visited the area, residents expressed shock about the event. One resident said, "They have been living here only three months and we have never heard them quarrel. We never expected what happened."

Another resident said that preceding the bitter argument, the children were taken away by a neighbour. When Newsday visited the hospital, a frightened Singh said, "I want him charged and sent back to his country."

"I cannot take another chance because I do not know when or if he will come back.

"And I do not know if he spends time in jail, if he will walk out and come for me.

"My greatest fear now is what will happen to me because the doctors have already told me the acid is slowly seeping through my skin into my bones, and if that happens the joints and bones will become hard.

"I have already been scarred for life, now I can become paralysed.

"Tonight I will be wrapped in plastic to prevent infection and to see if that will assist in restricting the acid."

The woman said she intends to return to her Charlieville home when she is released. Visiting the scene were Cpl Tony Villurel and PC Dolan Olivere who are investigating.
