Murdered little ‘Billy’
Screams, shouts and tears of anger flowed from family and friends yesterday, as the body of murdered 13-year-old Kareem "Billy" Danglade lay in a coffin at the Chinapoo Basketball Court, Morvant. Patricia Danglade, the victim’s mother, told Newsday that she wants justice for the death of her son. According to reports, on Novem-ber 2, Danglade was liming at a culvert not far from his Chinapoo home, when a power outage occurred. He had been sitting with seven of his friends when two gunmen approached the group. He had just come from playing basketball at the Chinapoo Basketball Court. The gunmen fired at the group, forcing them to scamper. Patricia had been standing nearby speaking to a friend, when she saw the scene and rushed to Danglade’s side. She found her son bleeding with a bullet wound to his head. He was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he died while undergoing emergency surgery. A large turnout of family members, team members from the Police Youth Club, the Malick Baptist Church, and students from the Barataria Junior Secondary School attended the funeral. Entertainers such as Bunji Garlin, Maximus Dan and Kees Dieffenthaller also showed their support. Maximus Dan said they came to show the need for peace in Trinidad and Tobago. "I am not here as an entertainer, I am first a man. Kareem was a boy who did not make it as a man," he said. Danglade had appeared in a television commercial with Maximus Dan against drug and alcohol abuse. Also showing support was Steve Cadiz, chairman of the Keith Noel 136 Committee, who said, "A child was murdered, that is sad and I don’t know how the authorities are clueless, and they can’t understand grief. They are not doing enough." He added that family members are not the ones to blame in crime situations. "They are not the ones bringing guns and drugs into the country. The Government is only giving lip service," he stated. The funeral service was held at the Malick Baptist Church, and Danglade was buried at the Tunapuna Cemetery.
