TT to host next Summit of the Americas

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina: The next Summit of the Americas will be hosted by Trinidad and Tobago, Organization of American States sources said on Saturday.

The date has yet to be set, but the gathering is expected to be held in late 2008 or 2009.

The first such pan-American summit was held at a US invitation in Miami in 1994.

The next was in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, in 1996, and the third in Santiago, Chile, in 1998.

The fourth wrapped up Saturday in the Argentine resort city of Mar del Plata, with countries failing to agree on a resumption of negotiations aimed at a free trade deal, backed by the United States, that would stretch from Canada down to Chile.
