Guyanese-born jeweler on acid throwing charge
SURESH SINGH is to have no contact whatsoever with his wife Savita Singh, who he allegedly doused with acid on Sunday evening. That was the stern warning the 27-year-old jeweler of Charlieville, Chaguanas, received yesterday from Chaguanas Magistrate Nenette Ford-John, when he appeared charged with throwing sulphuric acid on his wife Savita. The incident is alleged to have occurred at the couple’s home at Clarke Road, Charlieville, at 6 pm. Singh, a Guyanese-born jeweler, was on Monday charged by police with causing grievous bodily harm with the intent to wound Savita, 30. Yesterday, Singh was escorted barefoot by police from the Chaguanas Police Station to the Magistrates’ Court across the road. He looked expressionless as he stood before Ford-John, wearing a dark blue striped jersey and black short pants. There were fresh scars on the neck and hands of the accused Singh. The Lucozade bottle which contained sulphuric acid was brought into the courtroom yesterday. After the charge was read to Singh, the magistrate told him that he was not going to be called on to plead. Ford-John then instructed Singh that he is not to occupy the same house with wife Savita. She also told Singh that he is not to go within 500 metres of his wife. The woman, a mother of three, was up to yesterday warded at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. Singh was granted $75,000 bail with a surety. PC Basraj of the Chaguanas Police Station laid the charge. Singh is to re-appear on November 18.
