Panday playing God
THE EDITOR: When UNC political leader, Winston Dookeran, examined information he had before him regarding the conduct of the party’s internal executive election, he felt that sufficient evidence existed to cast doubt on the integrity of the recount process. It was then and for that reason that he wrote to the Chairman of the UNC’s elections management committee to request that the conduct and results of the party elections be revisited. One of the characteristics that set Mr Dookeran apart from most other Caribbean politicians is his ability to not only listen, but consider the advice of people around him. Similarly, one of the characteristics that set Mr Ramdial apart from most other professionals is the fact that he too has always been very welcoming of advice and different perspectives from the people around him. We are all aware of the sterling career Mr Dookeran has had. But what of Mr Ramdial? At the age of 70, Mr Ramdial has under his belt the distinction of having served a remarkable term as the President of the Senate and also as having served for an extended period and on numerous subsequent occasions as Acting President of the Republic. He is one of only a few distinguished gentlemen to have served the public without having once had his integrity substantially questioned. No less a person than the political leader Mr Dookeran has expressed the serious view that there were irregularities that needed to be investigated in the UNC internal elections. Mr Panday has played God to the careers of too many men and women in the past for there to be doubt as to whether he will do the same Mr Ramdial. I am urging you Mr Ramdial, you must not allow yourself to be just another casualty in the fight of a failed leader to cling to the rulership of a failing party that is trying to reinvent itself to save a failing state. You must now protect your image which you have developed over decades in public service. MARGARET SINGH Palmiste
