Cop in court for beating cop
A police officer with 13 years’ service appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate on three charges ranging from disorderly behaviour to assaulting a police officer. Appearing before Magistrate Halcian Yorke Young in the city’s Third Court was PC Dane Belfon, formerly attached to Guard and Emergency Branch. Belfon was arrested and charged yesterday by ASP Judy Carrington, with assaulting PC Keron Mc Donald on October 29 at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s. That charge was laid indictably and Belfon was not called on to plead. Belfon was also charged with acting in a disorderly manner at the same function. According to the last charge read to the accused, Belfon assaulted and beat Cheryl Hernandez at Queen’s Hall on October 29. The accused police officer pleaded not guilty to the last two charges. When Yorke Young asked if the accused had an attorney, he promised to secure legal representation by the end of the week. The prosecution did not object to bail, and Belfon was placed on $50,000 bail to cover all charges. Belfon was suspended after reports of an altercation at Queen’s Hall between two police officers during the Lord Nelson 75th birthday concert. Following investigations into the matter, a warrant was issued for the arrest of the suspended officer who was subsequently charged with the offences allegedly committed at the event. Belfon will reappear in court on November 16.
