Sad judge adjourns manslaughter case
A rumour in circulation yesterday that former Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Rangee Dolsingh SC had died in England was so distressing to a judge that he had to adjourn sentencing a man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The report, however, was false as Dolsingh is alive. The Hall of Justice in Port-of-Spain was abuzz with the news yesterday that Dolsingh, who had gone to England several months ago for medical treatment, had passed away on Wednesday night. Both judges and attorneys were lamenting his death yesterday. However, his brother, Bindra Dolsingh, also an attorney, assured Newsday that Dolsingh is alive. He said Dolsingh is recovering from surgery and is expected back home soon. Another friend of Dolsingh, Conrad Mookram, had telephoned the London hospital where Dolsingh is a patient and confirmed that he was alive. Justice Anthony Carmona, who had worked with Dolsingh for many years as a prosecutor and also a Deputy DPP, was very distraught over the news. The judge heard the rumour shortly before he had proposed to pass sentence on Terry Yearwood for manslaughter. He told attorneys in the matter that while he had intended to pass sentence on Yearwood, the news that a "good friend had passed away was very upsetting. I am unable to get my thoughts together. I need to be composed if I am to pass sentence." The judge later found out that his friend was still alive. He will sentence Yearwood, 37, of Don Miguel Road, El Socorro, today. Yearwood was charged with murdering his wife, Donna Marie Alexis, on October 10, 2003, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
