Abu Dhabi puts us to shame
THE EDITOR: The tiny Middle East country of Abu Dhabi is today implementing some of the largest and most amazing tourism development projects in the entire world. They involve giant, man-made islands with diameters of two and a half miles, five miles, and over nine miles. If memory serves me correctly, from a National Geographic documentary early November. Each circular reclamation has a perimeter breakwater, surrounding new land in the shape of a date palm, with sea between each of the "leaves." Sand from the seabed was used to crate the new terra firma, an engineering marvel. The first "palm" alone, will house over 120,000 inhabitants — luxury apartments, malls, etc. David Beckham has bought property there, the documentary states. The first "palm" was snapped up in minutes! The other "palms" will be bigger, more populated, and to top it off, a global (reclaimed) map consisting of over 150 isles, is in the works. Why am I giving this info? Not to glorify Abu Dhabi. But to ask the exasperating question — how can a tiny Mid-East kingdom do such marvels, while renowned and rich TT can’t even build one interchange? Or an overpass? How come they can do so much, and TT, so little? Maracas Bay is a mess, no real facilities at Las Cuevas, etc, and the narrow access road is 50 years behind the times. It adds up to disgusting, sickening, horrible incompetence in thought and action from an administration that should be ignominiously fired. Theirs is a most disgraceful lack of imagination and performance. Away with them — they are crippling our rich country! LLOYD CARTAR Westmoorings
