Cops leave Jamaat

MEMBERS OF the Jamaat al Muslimeen were allowed to return to the Mucurapo Road compound on Friday afternoon, after police and soldiers ended their two-day occupation of the premises.

Spokesman for the group, Abdul Rahim, told Sunday Newsday that Western Division Task Force officers and military personnel left the compound at about 3.30 pm without saying a word.

"A hole was dug up in the middle of the ground. It has nothing down there. The hole was three or four feet deep," Rahim said, adding that Jamaat members are cleaning up the mess. Meanwhile, Bakr, 64, remains in custody pending the hearing and determination of charges laid against him on Thursday and Friday.

The Muslimeen leader was denied bail before Justice Herbert Volney in the Port-of-Spain High Court.

He is charged with possession of a high-powered sniper rifle, 565 rounds of ammunition and a hand grenade, as well as sedition and three other offences. His matters have been adjourned to Thursday in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court.
