Woman killed by coconut tree

A FREAK accident yesterday left an elderly woman dead and several persons injured during a religious service at the Manzanilla Beach.

Reports indicate that a coconut tree fell on a tent occupied by about 50 persons, during the annual Kartic celebrations at the beach. Margaret Dhansook, 65, of Chase Village, Chaguanas, was killed.

Several other persons were rushed to the Sangre Grande District Hospital, where they remain warded. One of the injured, Pundit Seeram Maharaj, who was conducting the prayers, suffered injuries to his back and hands and was transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. No children were involved.

Newsday learnt that the injured were completing a Ganga pooja by performing aarti, when the tree fell. They reportedly had travelled from Caparo to Manzanilla to participate in the celebrations, to end a two-month fasting period for Hindus.
