Senate pays tribute to Montano
The business of the Upper House was yesterday set aside for a moment in order to commemorate the life and death of founding PNM member, Gerard Albert Montano. Vice President of the Senate, Rawle Titus, called on a Government member, an Opposition member and an Independent senator to offer condolences to the Montano family. Eighty-seven-year-old Montano, the father of Labour Minister Danny Montano, and Opposition Senator Robin Montano, died on Sunday. Reflecting on the Montano’s contribution to politics in this country, Titus described the elder Montano’s life as one of service, during which several eras had been straddled — colonialism, internal self-government and independence. According to Minister of Public Administration and Information, Dr Lenny Saith, Montano, who was a close family friend, had made a tremendous contribution to politics in this country. He said he was sure there was a place where good people go after they died, and he was convinced that Montano was there. Opposition Senator Wade Mark described Montano as a "son of the soil," while Independent Senator, Prof Ramesh Deosaran, described him as an "architect of national affairs." The funeral service for Montano will take place at 10 am tomorrow at All Saints Anglican Church, Marli Street, Port-of-Spain.
