Tear down that wall

THE EDITOR: The landscape of Matelot Village has been eroded by by heavy rainfall since November 11, 1971. This resulted in structural damage to a 100 feet retaining stone wall. The leaning wall of Matelot has been an eyesore to the residents and visitors to the village ever since.

It is located 150 feet from the Community Primary School and possess a serious threat to the community school and back. The leaning rock wall of Matelot will collapse tragically one day. It will crush anyone in the area, even schoolchildren if the damaged wall is not demolished soon.

Past and present parliamentary representatives of the area, the ministers of Works and Transport and his civil engineers do not have a practical solution to restore a wall.

The rock wall was erected during the year 1939 against the back drop of the Paria Main Road to protect the coastal hill. The solution to the problem is to dismantle the damage wall, bench the affected area by erecting rock walls from the seascape to prevent further land movements. The Ministry of Works and Transport instead of constructing retaining walls from the sea shore to curtail further erosions opted to plant two signs that read Leaning wall." What is disheartening is the length of time it’s taking the relevant authority to address the situation.
