Great opportunity to unite leaders, party

THE EDITOR: It must be heartwarming for the people of TT to see the government and opposition finally heeding the words of President Max Richards and coming together on the issue of crime in the country. It is also good to see them coming to some consensus on many of the proposed remedies, especially on the legislative and administrative levels.

The people must surely be upbeat at these developments and are now waiting with bated breath to see what now comes out of these "talks." To hold talks for three days is one thing, but now the really hard work comes, ie draft law(s) that both sides can agree on.

I suggest that since both parties have brilliant lawyers and other learned individuals in their camps, that the parties should appoint a team to draft their own versions of the legislation. Upon completion of the respective "drafts," they should hold a caucus to iron out the differences.

This to me would make more sense, and help reduce the frictions when the legislation is finally brought to the floor of the Parliament. This would truly show the nation the willingness of the parties to work together and get something done for the nation, about the soaring crime statistics. I believe this "new" approach will win them points and help dismiss the notion that only adversarial politics can play out in TT.

And like the recent great football victory by the Soca Warriors has helped unite the country behind the team and the sport, this effort will also help to unite the country behind its leaders and parties.

We can only hope and hold our collective breaths.
