Couva: Downstream capital
ASHMEER MOAHAMMED, the man wearing the mantle as new president of the Couva/Pt. Lisas Chamber of Commerce, wants Couva to become the investment capital of downstream industries. Mohammed, corporate secretary of KC Confectionery in Couva, stressed that the people of Couva and its environs should benefit from the rapid growth in the energy sector and from the possibilities arising from this. Mohammed, who was elected at the Chamber’s annual general meeting last week, succeeds Feroz Khan, CEO of Quality Cash and Carry Supermarket and Mousepad Limited. He led the organisation for three years but did not seek re-election. Khan, who will continue to serve on the Chamber executive, said he wanted to give others a chance to lead and that others should be given an opportunity to carry the organisation forward at a time of rapid expansion in Central Trinidad. He explained that his vision helped the Chamber to get back on track. Under Khan’s presidency the Sugar and Energy Festival was reactivated this year. The new president gained his primary school education at Exchange RC School, in Couva, and one of his teachers was Trade Minister Ken Valley. He is also a director of International Products Limited and a Member of the Association of Busines Executive (MABE). Mohammed told Newsday that his chief aim would be to promote and develop busines in Central Trinidad. Mohammed said the Chamber should be taking a close look at the new Couva Development Plan and was working to get the secondary and link roads should be re-opened and resurfaced, to relieve major traffic congestion in the main shopping area of Couva.
