Tendulkar in Tarouba
THE EDITOR: It is with great interest that I notice the establishment of practice turf wickets at the Northeastern Regional Sporting Complex in Sangre Grande. To quote the Honourable Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs and Member of Parliament for the area, this facility is the first of its kind in the Caribbean with lights for night practice, retractable roofs for normal lighting practice and costs over one million dollars. Interesting, because for the last two years no turf wickets were available for competitive cricket on grounds in this entire region, except for the Northeastern College ground. All other grounds Valencia to Matelot, Sangre Grande, Cumuto, Manzanilla, Tamana, Plum Mitan, and other areas of this region, hardball cricket is in this day still played on Matting wickets. The two existing turf wickets at the Damarie Hill Recreation Ground and the Brooklyn Recreation Ground are not maintained by the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation. But alas a milliondollar practice turf wicket facility. Most of the areas mentioned above are in the constituency of the Minister of Sport and all the grounds are under the control of the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, yet there are no proper grounds in the area. This is a time when both the Central Government and Local Government are of the same ruling body, in a time when money is no problem, and in a time when the Member of Parliament is the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs. I invite all the media persons, print and electronic to a tour of this area and witness the deplorable conditions of these grounds, and to find a single facility of any standard. So in the middle of an entire region with no proper playing grounds emerges a spanking milliondollar practice facility. How interesting? My understanding this is a practice facility for World Cup 2007. Maybe it is a case of Tendulkar in Tarouba and Sangakara in Salybia! Got the drift? VISHNU RAMBARAN Sangre Grande
