Mother Trinidad and Tobago
THE EDITOR: Permit me to join the nation in congratulating Mr Jack Warner and the Soca Warriors for making us proud by winning that historic match in Bahrain and so qualifying for the World Cup finals in Germany. I would like to say a special thanks to the Golden Head of Dennis Lawrence for guiding the ball between one of their defender’s legs into the goal — not forgetting that this same head displayed such composure and intelligence in insisting that the TT Warriors move away from the confusion when the Bahrain players surrounded the referee after their player kicked out the ball from our goalkeeper’s hand to score an illegal goal. Brothers and sisters, it took a football game for us to show that we are one nation, one love, one people. Almost 200 years after slavery ended and 160 years since Indians arrived and as many as 43 years of Independence, we now realise we are one forceful nation. In the past, we have proved that we were winners in George Bovell’s swimming, in Ato Boldon’s and Hasely Crawford’s track and field, in the beauty of Miss Universe — Penny and Wendy, Miss World — Giselle, batsman Brian Lara’s 375 and 400 and most recently achieving the passing target for the most runs in the world. How great a country! I am appealing to every Trinbagonian from now on to continue to display this unity and love for one another. Let us see God’s face in every human face. We must continue to be one nation, one people, one love. This stunning victory has also instilled in us a renewed love and commitment to Mother Trinidad and Tobago. The fact that several of our ancestral countries did or did not qualify is of little or no significance. We are so proud of this day because we are Trinbagonians — we belong here and no where else.
