Medical centre disappoints

THE EDITOR: On Sunday December 11, I went to a medical centre in the west to check in for a medical procedure that was arranged by my doctor for Monday, December 12. On my arrival at 5 pm I was told that my name was not on any form. My doctor’s name was, but no mention was made of me as being his patient. After a lot of phoning around, I was eventually told that the admission fee would be $5,000 which I paid and received a receipt numbered 7020. My patient number was listed as 5725. I was then taken upstairs where again my name was not listed and I was not expected. I was told to sit in the lounge and wait.

After waiting for just over one hour, I approached the desk clerk to enquire about the delay and find out about a private room that was requested by my doctor. Again, I was told that my name was not on their list. I then insisted that something be done immediately, as I had to start my preparation at 7 pm for the procedure scheduled for 9 am the following day. I was subsequently placed in a double room and told that when a single became available I would be transferred. Everything went well thereafter. The service was good and the nursing staff efficient. After the procedure my doctor informed me that on leaving the facility I could collect a refundable check at the billing department. I did not on the day I left, as I was not feeling well and just wanted to get home.

At 11.45 am on Wednesday December 14, I went to the billing department where I collected my bill which indicated on it that I was entitled to a refund of $4,200. However, I was told the cheque had not been prepared, and the director responsible for signing cheques had already left and would not be returning that day. This treatment from the administrative department of the health institution is totally unacceptable, especially from an institution of its kind. The centre is touted as being one of the best medical facilities in the country, but I would like to let the people of Trinidad and Tobago know what they can expect from the administrative department of this so-called high-priced institution.
