Condolences to the Rattan family

THE EDITOR: It is understandable that a grieving father in his great loss should see his son’s behaviour as exemplary even in death. However, there is no evidence for media reports that the victim "struggled", which unthinking persons can then construe as the "cause" of death, or even worse, provide some basis for the killers’ escaping punishment for murder.

What we do know is that there was an intention to kidnap, which was successful, and that the victim sustained extensive wounds and injuries which caused his death. Those injuries are consistent with an intention to kill or cause serious bodily harm resulting in death. They are also consistent with an intention to kill born of a realisation that the kidnapping was a failure because the kidnappers learnt of the modest means of the victim and his parents, or that other key arrangements involving the kidnapping fell through.

I extend my sincere condolences to the grieving family.
