Bean bags instead of television sets

THE EDITOR: I was stunned to learn recently that Digicel has donated television sets to the St Dominic’s Home for Children. Of all the things to donate to children, who are already bereft of family! Television sets? Television is reviled by many as being detrimental to human/family relationships.

These children presumably do not have a family to begin with. One might hope that they could build some warm relationships with their peers. What about cozy bean bag chairs surrounded by shelves full of books for all ages? Doesn’t that sound inviting? Has Digicel ever heard of a library? Turn off the television. Better yet, get rid of it. It substitutes for human interaction.

Digicel has erred, but has the opportunity to correct the error. Any librarian would be happy to suggest a list of one hundred or more books for children. All the orphanages and homes helping children on Nelson Street, Beetham and elsewhere should also be beneficiaries. Television, indeed! Digicel will no doubt protest that the management of the St Dominic’s Home requested television sets. That is not an excuse for donating irresponsibly to the community.
