Greater roles for churches

THE EDITOR: In a recent news item in your nationally accepted newspaper, Bishop Best of the Anglican community, made a fervent plea for more young people to enter the ordained ministry. The need for more young people to accept the challenge to become soldiers for Christ, involves Christian churches in Trinidad and Tobago and all over the world.

Recently, I read in the Anglican Lookout paper, that two young persons were permitted to preach and from reports received, they did a very good job at the St Sylvan Anglican Church, St Mary’s junction, Carapichaima. Congratulations to Rev Carlyle Lynch, the parish priest of St Sylvan for his worthwhile effort.

It is a well-established fact that all Christians are committed to accept Biblical truths, because it represents the word of God. Therefore, we as Christians are committed to doing what God has told us to do. Here is what we are told to do according to the Bible: "Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers — not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. (1 Peter 5: 2-3) In other words, the responsibility to recruit, prepare and bring young people to maturity in Christ rests on the shoulders of every elder in the church. Also, not only does the Bible identify the responsibility of the elders/priests/Bishops, but also young persons are told what is expected of them.

We are living in demonic times, man has become more insular, selfish, and materialistic.

We no longer speak about we, or us, only "I". The exemplars available for young people to follow along the right path are limited. Therefore, churches have a most important role to play in these troubled times — not only in the church buildings, but outside, in homes, schools, the trenches, the ghettoes, on the sideways and byways.
