Restore lighthouse to former glory
THE EDITOR: I am writing today to express my total horror at the so-called restoration of the lighthouse in Port-of-Spain. I think that it is a travesty to adorn such a historical landmark with such a "paint job." I have no problem with the city of Port-of-Spain wanting to support the Soca Warriors, as I am a true football fan in my own right. I do however have a huge problem with the city using a monument of such dignity and history to proclaim their support for our local football team. The paint job on the light house should have been maintained, and allowed to stand majestically at the entrance to the city of Port-of-Spain, a reminder of years past when the lighthouse, which was established in the 1880s, consisted of a 19.5m (64 ft) hexagonal tower with a small lantern at the top and a gallery in the middle, painted white with red trim. Please Mr Mayor, if you want to support the football team, by all means you can erect a huge banner similar to the one which TSTT has used to promote their Bmobile service. Please restore the lighthouse to its former glory and let it stand as the true historical monument that it is and allow it to garner the respect which is truly deserved. L BOISSELLE Diego Martin
