A new privileged class?
THE EDITOR: Recent reports and opinions in the newspapers have been extremely enlightening as they relate to the filing of Declaration of Assets and Liabilities as required by law to be submitted to the Integrity Commission. Dr Terrence Farrell, Mr William Lucie-Smith, the Trinidad and Tobago Transparency Institute, of which Mr Reginald Dumas is the Chairman, the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers Association and other business groups, have all stated quite openly that they are not in favour of this requirement. Even our Prime Minister has said that the Government is experiencing difficulty in attracting candidates of quality for appointments to State boards because of this obligation. Are we now developing a ‘privileged’ class in this society ie citizens who are worthy and qualified to serve, but who have come to their collective senses and have refused to do so and certainly don’t need the Government wuk?
