‘Piracy killing us’
Calypso Queen winner Denyse Plummer is calling for the authorities to do something about the piracy of their music this Carnival. "We do not feel good about piracy. It is hurtful and extremely unfair to us," Plummer said in an interview yesterday during a rehearsal at Calypso Revue on Sunday and expressed great displeasure with those who peddled unlicensed music. She said, "We make our money by selling these CDs. If artistes cannot sell the CDs to get back the money they spent to make it, then how are we going to live? Some of them have to borrow money to make them." Alison Demas, CEO, Copyright Music Organisation of TT, said legislation needs to be amended to deal with the piracy. In a meeting with senior police officials, she said they promised to come down hard on pirates. The seasoned calypsonian stressed, "The laws which govern us must come down hard on them." Plummer, marketing manager of the Calypso Revue, said that the calypsonians felt powerless to to do anything about the piracy, stressing that something must be done here. "The people who are doing it should know that we need to make a living," she said. Plummer’s album for this year is called Simply Denise. This album, she said, includes hits from the early days that were never put on CD.
