Living in a state of mediocrity

THE EDITOR: I would like the Prime Minister and political leader of the PNM to kindly explain to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago why, in a little country such as ours, that is blessed with a variety of natural resources, enjoys significant revenue from gas and oil and has a national budget in excess of $30 Billion, 80 percent of the roads are in poor condition.

Many of them are virtually impassable, our fire service is short of vital equipment and existing equipment is in exceedingly poor shape, police stations are in such a state of disrepair that they are being abandoned, school buildings are in poor shape and surrounded by bush, court houses are virtually unfit for habitation, the health system is sadly inadequate and frequently suffers from a shortage of drugs and other equipment, a large section of the population is still without water and are forced to pay for water at exorbitant prices while still being billed by WASA.

The Judicial system is so inefficient and outdated that it takes upwards of ten years in many instances for a simple matter to be determined, the prisons are overcrowded and poorly maintained and not fit even to house the worst criminals, a water supply so lacking that many buildings have gone up in flames because of no water in the mains, large areas being covered in several feet of water due to inadequate and clogged waterways and rivers resulting in millions of dollars in loss of food and crops and home appliances and equipment and last but not least, a rising incidence of serious crime.

Yet, inspite of all the existing problems and shortcomings attending the country and its citizens, the government is planning on building a new City of Port-of-Spain. But long live the PM and it shall prevail, since it is quite apparent that a large section of the population is quite content to exist in a state of mediocrity and neglect and where long and loud protest have to be made in order to achieve the slightest results.
