Global Youth Service Day

The International Education and Resource Network Trinidad and Tobago (iEARTHNTnT), which is the lead agency for GYSD, has began the process of mobilising other youth-oriented groups and government agencies, schools, church groups as well as media and other sectors to join in the celebration of youth.

The Global Youth Service Day celebrations will take place tomorrow to Sunday.

Around the world, millions of young people are making a difference in their community through programmes that encourage voluntary action.

The focus of GYSD is to stimulate greater awareness and support for methodologies which promote positive youth development and civic engagement by individuals.

Youth volunteering is an effective way to build strong youth and strong communities and the GYSD also forms part of a broader global effort to recognise the importance of youth participation.

Youth Service America, with the Global Youth Action Network as its key partner and a consortium of international organisations and hundreds of coordinating communities, work together to organise GYSD around the world.

Some of the international coordinating committees are the Inter-American Development Bank, the International Education and Resource Network, Habitat for Humanity, Global Youth Action Network, United Nations Volunteers, United Nations Programme for Youth and the World Federation of United Nations Associations.

On GYSD, millions of young people in numerous countries worldwide highlight and carry out thousands of community improvement projects.

Some of the goals of GYSD programme include the mobilising the youth and adults to meet the needs of their communities through volunteering and to learn and share effective practices in youth service, youth voice and civic engagement in the world today.
