Councillor appeals to youths

He underscored this point in an address at the annual Easter Sports at the Caparo Recreation Ground. The meeting was organised by the Caparo Village Council and the Easter Sports Committee. More than 400 persons attended the event.

“I urge you to take a look at what is happening to our communities and the nation-state of Trinidad and Tobago. You, the young people, are therefore, assigned the task and responsibility to turn this tide and become exemplars not only among your peers, but also your parents,” Councillor Ramoutar said.

The Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation official said that sports must be the “common denominator to wield this nation and its people against the evil forces that have stalked this land.”

Fellow Councillor Sahadeo Boondoo urged the participants in the more than 45-event programme to demonstrate camaraderie amidst stiff competition.

“Let this sporting activity be a shining example to the rest of Trinidad and Tobago in terms of unity and commitment,” he added.

Former Councillor Mano Beharry, 92, years was honoured for his contribution to the community spirit in Caparo.

Councillor Ramoutar said that the Caparo Sports has been a landmark occasion in Central Trinidad and is designed as a social and community feature for over 40 years.

The recipient of the Humming Bird Medal for Community Service said: “Our nation’s young people must demonstrate your innate and creative qualities and work towards becoming national and international players in the sporting arena using the Soca Warriors as an example.”

A minute of silence was observed for Sean Luke and Caparo businessman, Stephen Hackshaw who was murdered at his Carr Trace, Caparo residence on Sunday morning just after returning from church.

Winners in the road races were:Men— Roshan Ramsook, Videsh Sookoo, Peter Alfonso, Kevin Gilbert and David Lee Burgess; Women— Julia Ramkisson, Shenell Burgess and Ayeisha Henry.

Other awards went to Chazaq Arnold, youngest male; Wendy-Ann Alfonso, youngest female; Carlton Burgess, oldest competitor. Walking race prizes: Men— Michael Garcia, Allan Richards, Stephen Miguel; Women— Victoria Gomez, Chantelle James, Raakhee Boodhai.

A special prize went to Rajpattie Boodhai.
